A sisterhood of women taking action for community change.
The goal of the Caring Cabinets Network is to meet an unspoken, unmet need to provide essential household supplies to disadvantaged families, particularly women and children. We are a collaboration of the Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians Service Unit #608 and the Junior League of Johnson City, Tennessee.
With the support of local volunteers, we are creating a network of Caring Cabinets across our community to provide free essential household supplies, including feminine hygiene products. Our community needs us now more than ever. Today in Washington County, TN, 43% of households struggle to make ends meet. Our neighbors face unprecedented challenges in getting essential household supplies, including cleaning and feminine hygiene products.
Like any other challenge, we can’t do this alone. Our goal is to make the cabinets sustainable over time with help from other troops, organizations, churches, and folks from our community. We’re actively looking for prospective cabinet locations, hosts, and ideas from local Girl Scout and Junior League members, and members of the broader community. We work with numerous local groups, the Washington County Health Department, city and county school districts, and city board members to nominate sites based on demographic data.
We know that we can’t eradicate the numerous issues with our societal and welfare systems, but we’re hoping to bridge some gaps. The Caring Cabinets Network is just one way we all can help. If you aren’t comfortable with or around construction tools, then consider creating small bags of packs with the cleaning supplies or hygiene products. If you’d rather be building the cabinet and see to its installation, then gather your materials and let’s get to work. There’s something to be done by everyone. Join us and let’s work together to see everyone in our community thrive because everyone deserves to have their basic needs met.
